Among the crosses and martyrdoms which are drawn up in our villages, we can classify these testimonys of the Christian faith in three categories:
- Crosses of crossroads.
- Crosses of mission.
- Crosses of the cemeteries
According to the richness of their decoration and their attributes, in particular the presence of statues being next to the cross, they more often take the denomination of martyrdom;
The crosses of crossroads are oldest. Thus in Vouzeron, without knowing the exact date of their erection, we have a trace of their existence on the land register known as “Napoleonean” which listed them in 1825.
Vouzeron has six of them.
I. - the cross of the Wood, only of which we found the denomination thanks to a document dating from September 3, 1835 indexing the demarcations of the grounds belonging to the commune. Decayed, it was the subject of a replacement by the municipality and was blessed on September 3, 2006 by the abbot Thierry Chaudun, priest of the Notre-Dame parish of the Heathers. It is located at the junction of the road of the Foliage and that of Loeuf of Houx.
II - The cross known as of Large Mount compared to its presence at the entry of the way which serves the buildings of the O.N.F. Reduced in its face in consequence of its outdatedness, it is, however, with the preceding one, always present.
III - A cross indexed with a crossing of the way of Bubelle whose site invaded by the vegetation, would require a cleaning. The inhabitants of the vicinity remember its presence.
IV a site materialized by some stones makes it possible to locate the cross which was drawn up with the direction of march of Vouzeron with Nançay, its memory is still present.
V - A cross was drawn up in edge of the way which leads to the Barons and of the way of the farm of Triboulette, not of traces.
VI - A cross much more distant on the way from the Barons, with the forest direction of march of Aubois. This martyrdom is not mentioned on the land register of 1825, but appears on the land register of 1953.
In Vouzeron, they were the goal of the procession of Rogations which took place the three days before the Rise. Instituted towards 474 per Mamers saint (known in the weather saying with the saints Pancrace and Servais) they were to entreat the last frosts, most dangerous for the vegetation. These days are named,” the saints of ice”.
These processions had as a starting point the church of Vouzeron and even, there are a few tens of years, the Foliage where the Bodineau abbot taught catechism. These testimonys come inhabitants from the commune who took part in these demonstrations.
The crosses of mission are rather recent (end of XIXème, beginning of XXéme). It is thus in Vouzeron where the cross of mission, set up in an angle of the place of the church following a evangelic mission preached by the Thiébaud father of the Society of Jesus of the 6 at March 26, 1899 was installed on this date and was restored on August 24, 1986.
The cross of cemetery, out of stone, with steps, is the old cross of the cemetery which was located around the church. This one was transferred in 1872 on its current site in a ground given by the baron Roger and called the field from Ruesse.
These modest crosses belong to our daily landscape and, whatever our religious conviction, became the common inheritance of all.
